Helping Homeless Bassets

It costs UFBH approximately $300 (on average) to rescue one basset hound. However, many bassets we bring into our care have special health concerns above and beyond the norm. Part of UFBH's mission is to bring each basset hound in our care into optimal health before placing them in a new home. When bassets have special health problems, it adds considerably to our costs. UFBH always needs people who are willing to donate to our cause. The following information will tell you how you can make a difference in a needy basset hound's life.

Donate or Become a Virtual Foster

If you are still interested in helping needy basset hounds, but you can not foster or provide transportation, consider making a donation or becoming a Virtual Foster. Regular donations and Virtual Foster donations help UFBH pay for care for our bassets. The only significant difference between donation type is that Virtual Foster donations are made in a specific basset's name and all other donations are used for any basset that needs it. Donations are particularly important for our senior hounds. UFBH takes in bassets of all ages so long as we have foster homes to place them in. Unfortunately, many senior hounds have special medical needs that require much more than we ordinarily would spend on a healthy basset. All donations, Virtual Foster or not, are tax deductible as UFBH is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) public charity.

Volunteer

• Foster a Basset—
  Foster homes are one of the most critical volunteer positions for any rescue. Foster families provide a temporary home and evaluate the basset's personality and behavior around other dogs and pets, adults, and children. By observing and reporting on the basset's personality, attitude and temperament, the foster home is able to help our Adoption Coordinator match the hound to the best adoptive family. Foster homes also help the basset hound to make a smooth transition to their forever home.

  

• Transportation and Home Checks—
  Often, UFBH needs help getting basset hounds from the shelters to the foster home, or from the foster home to vet appointments. Most folks involved in our cause are volunteers who have full time jobs. This makes transportation a challenge. Moreover, because most of our active members live along the Wasatch Front and our coverage area includes the entire state, we are always looking for people to help us with home checks in those areas that are farther away.
