April 2005

Greetings!

Well, I think my life may be going to the dogs! Literally. For some of you, this may not come as any big surprise as you know me well enough to tease me about my asthma being kennel cough and you know that nothing, not even my nicest dress clothes, will prevent me from getting on the floor with the dogs. Nevertheless, I knew I had crossed some kind of line when I purchased a book on cooking for your dog. I got the book just for fun, right? Well, I decided to give one of those recipes a whirl...heavily modified for my slow cooker because I didn't want to slave over a stove all day. (I'm not THAT bad, right?) Well, I must admit, I'm sold on this cooking thing. For one, my Annabelle is a very fussy eater. She's not turned down one meal since! Second, I'm surprised at how much better she's been digesting her food. All the digestive woes I dealt with before seemed to have disappeared. And, when you are 'pooper-scoopering' your yard, that's a pretty valuable thing!

Clear off the basset slobber and clear out the cobwebs... It's time to start saving your stuff...

The UFBH Garage Sale has been planned for April 30, 2005. Please consider donating items for us to sell. We've had several senior bassets that needed to visit the veterinarian's office in the last month. Our bills are going to be pretty expensive. UFBH will donate any items not sold to other local nonprofit groups such as the women's shelter.

This year, the Garage Sale will be held at:

    2844 E 3365 S
    Salt Lake City, UT 84109

We will be open for business by 8 AM.

Maps and directions can be provided upon request.

The 2nd Annual Wasatch Waddle was a rousing success! I'm happy to say that this year, we did not get in trouble with parade officials for delaying the parade by almost a full block!

    Now, for a drumroll, please...

We raised $1845!!! Peggy and Andy Chudd along with their grand-daughter, Mikaela, brought in the most pledges at $240! Mary Kemp made second place with $215! Thank you to the Chudd family and Mary for working so hard on behalf of the bassets!

Great big 'thank you's' to ALL those who participated. Basset rescue wouldn't be possible without you.

    We Found Forever Homes...

    Harley

Just before this past Christmas we received an adoption request from a young couple looking for a basset for the wife's brother, who had recently lost his elderly dog to cancer. Choosing a pet for someone else is not a good idea, and we especially don't like them to be given as "gifts". The family was very understanding and agreed not to rush the process and wait until their brother could participate. Our little Harley went to live with his new family right after the holidays. This adoption could not have had a happier ending. Although a "new best friend" can never replace one that has to leave us, Harley's arrival was a great comfort for Daniel, and they bonded immediately.

    Jerry

Some of our rescued hounds take longer than others to find their forever home. Our special little guy, Jerry, had been in UFBH care for over a year. Each time he moved from one home to another I couldn't help but wonder what he must have been thinking. Not once did he "complain" or lose his wonderful spirit. And then it happened, his forever Mom & Dad found him, and now he even has a basset sister, Rosie to hang out in the garden with. Thanks for being so patient, "Jer".

Zippy is a sweet boy with a somewhat unusual fear of stairs. If he loves you, you WILL know it as he is very generous with his kisses. Although, he is much happier now than he's been in awhile, Zippy has had a rough time of things lately. Since coming into our care, he's struggled with chronic urinary problems and his hair loss has not improved much. We are guessing that for many years he was neglected as his previous owner was very elderly and has since passed away. At this point, we are still running tests to determine the cause of his health issues. We have a sneaking suspicion that he may have Cushing's...
