Greetings!
I want to send out a very special thank you to our foster
families. We literally could not survive (nor the bassets) without
you. I am always amazed at how easily you accept new bassets into
your home and heart and how selflessly you let them go.
I have been giving some thought of late to how we might encourage
more families to consider fostering a basset. I would very much like
to hear from you, our membership, on why you have decided not to
foster and what might encourage you to consider giving it a try. Are
you concerned about the financial hardship of caring for an extra
hound? Are you concerned about letting the hound go to a new family?
Please email me (intake@utahbassethoundrescue.com)
with your thoughts as the UFBH board will be discussing potentials
updates to the foster home policies and procedures at the next board
meeting. We want to be responsive to the needs of our volunteers.
I look forward to hearing from everyone!
Bellyrubs to all,
Jennifer

Meet the Board! Jennifer Kleinschmidt,
President
Have you ever wondered who was behind the scenes and
instigated the creation of Utah Friends of Basset Hounds? 2
1/2 years ago Jennifer Kleinschmidt had a vision to create a
group that was crazy about bassets! Meet Jennifer
Kleinschmidt, our board president!
"I have owned and cared for a dog for the last 25 years and
I am well versed, albeit not a professional, in dog behavior.
My first Basset Hound has been a challenge both health-wise
and behaviorally. Therefore, I am familiar with the various
problems and frustrations that unsuspecting new Basset Hound
owners can face."
Jennifer is the supervisor for the University of Utah
International Admissions Office and has a BFA and a MA degree
from the University of Utah. She currently lives in Salt Lake
City with her husband John, and basset hound, Annabelle.

| Wasatch Waddle: We Need Your Help! |
 |
In just a few months UFBH will once again waddle down the
Saint Patrick's Day parade route with green derby hats and
all...and we need your help! The Wasatch Waddle is our biggest
fundraiser for the year and we need YOUR pledges to help raise
money!
We know that it can be very intimidating to ask friends and
family to help you support basset rescue, so we've compiled
the following list of ideas for you:
1. Sell a food item you prepare and donate the
proceeds as pledges. 2. If you work with a company like
Mary Kay or Avon, or are self-employed etc., donate all your
profit (or a portion of your profit) for a specified period of
time as pledges. 3. Sell that special craft your are
famous for and donate the proceeds as pledges.
As you can see, you don't have to outright beg people for
money. Offer your friends and family something they can't
possibly refuse in exchange for a small donation. And, as
always, whoever brings in the most pledges will win a prize!
This year, part of that prize will be the signed original
Waddle logo artwork by the famous former Disney
artist, Ron Clements! Ron was one of the animators in
the movies Aladdin, Little Mermaid and the
Fox and the Hound!
Other rescue groups regularly make thousands of dollars on
their waddles; Arizona's waddle brought in around $10,000 in
2006 and their event was actually rained out! We can do this,
too! We need to do this!
If you have more ideas or suggestions, please email them
to: fundraising@utahbassethoundrescue.com.

| Holiday Safety Tips |
 |
|
With the month of November fast approaching, families will
start thinking about Christmas, and with Christmas comes the
decorations. A house decorated for Christmas can present some
hazards for pets, primarily because they will be curious about
all the new items hanging around the house.
PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc. offers these tips to ensure
that your pets also have a healthy and happy holiday:
- Christmas Trees: Pine needles can get lodged in an
animal's esophagus, making it painfully prickly for your pet
to swallow.
- Deck the Halls: A bunch of mistletoe may tempt a festive
kiss, but PETCO warns that eating this holiday greenery
could cause a drop in blood pressure, as well as vomiting
and swollen throat and mouth tissue. Other holiday foliage,
including Holly and Poinsettias, contain toxins that could
lead to severe stomach problems, as well as skin, mouth and
eye irritation. Worse yet, Yew is extremely toxic, and one
mouthful could be deadly.
- Finally, the best present you can give to your pets this
holiday season is good health and some extra loving
attention.

Featured Basset |

Every so often, UFBH has a basset they just can not help
despite all efforts. Lafayette was just such a basset. He came
to us as an owner surrender with his littermate, Napoleon.
Other than knowing the two bassets had been left in the
backyard of the prior home pretty much their entire lives, we
knew nothing more about Lafayette's and Napoleon's background.
Napoleon was happily adopted. Lafayette began showing signs of
a severe anxiety disorder. All the evidence, consultations
with behaviorists and our vet pointed to a neurological
problem for which there was no treatment. UFBH, along with
Lafayette's foster mom, decided it would be best to release
Lafayette from the mental anguish of which he so obviously
suffered.
Lafayette left us for the Rainbow Bridge on Friday, October
27th, surrounded by those who loved him. Please help us
remember him by giving your bassets bellyrubs in his honor.
