Utah Friends of Basset Hounds was started in the fall of 2002 by a group of 5. In the first 2 years, we had 15 adoptions. In the last 2 years we have had 175 basset hound adoptions, and we continue to grow. We currently have over 75 dogs in our care, many of those permanent Forever Fosters who will remain with us until the end of their lives.
Bassets are the clowns of the dog world. They enjoy each other’s company, and are very seldom aggressive. They are loving, funny, charming dogs and we are in love with the breed. By taking the bassets directly from owners and from the shelters, we make room for other breeds of dogs and help them get adopted, too.
Each of our dogs has a story. We pulled Patti from a shelter, only to find she had serious untreated injuries from being hit by a car. We received Harley, Hailey, and Hobart from the family of a woman who passed away. Roscoe came from a young couple who both worked and went to school and found that an 9 month old basset had a lot more energy than they ever imagined. Dudley and Leroy were being kept in a shed by a relative of their owner. Winsor and Eesa, ages 9 and 11, were given up when their lifelong owners lost their home to foreclosure. A woman had to find a home for her dog so she could go to a domestic violence shelter. Another woman dying of cancer wanted her basset to be safe with a new family. We are proud to say that with your help we have never yet had to say “no” to a basset in need, and we never want that day to come.
So many people help UFBH make a difference. The volunteer who picks up the basset from a shelter or humane society. The person who takes him to the vet to be neutered. The foster family who cares for him until he finds his forever family. The bassets who have been neglected or abused and then go to loving, caring homes touch our hearts. But the ones who are given up by loving, caring homes and then are given a second life with another family touch us just as much.
As the number of bassets needing help increases, our need for contributions and foster families also increases. We understand that with the economic times, money is sometimes short. Fostering a basset can save UFBH $150.00 or more in boarding costs a month. If you can foster, or donate, or volunteer to help in any way, please contact us. Every one of the 500 plus hounds that have been rescued thanks you, and our board of directors thanks you for your continued involvement and support.
